This video shows the major parts of the brain, starting with the external anatomy where the pituitary gland, optic chiasma (nerves) , olfactory lobes, dura mater, and the parts of the brain stem: midbrain, pons, medulla, and spinal cord. The brain is the cut along the longitudinal fissure to reveal internal structures of the brain: corpus callosum, ventricles, thalamus, hypothalamus, superior and inferior colliculi. This video is very helpful as an introduction before students enter the lab and perform their own dissections.
Students can use the Sheep Brain Dissection Guide to carefully locate these structures.
Sheep brains can be purchased directly from biological supply companies or through Amazon.
