Epithelial tissue serves as a covering for external structures (skin) and internal organs. \u00a0There are many categories of epithelial cells that many beginning anatomy students must learn to identify. \u00a0 Generally, epithelial tissue is classified as either simple or stratified. \u00a0Stratified tissue consists of many layers of cells and simple tissue is a single layer. \u00a0In both cases, the cells are attached to a basement membrane. \u00a0 To further identify tissue types, they are classified as squamous (flat), \u00a0cuboidal (square), and columnar (columns). \u00a0 Combining these terms gives the specific names of the tissues.<\/p>\n

1. Simple Squamous<\/strong> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0– \u00a0found in respiratory cells and capillaries, specialized for diffusion<\/p>\n

2. Simple Cuboidal<\/strong> \u00a0 \u00a0 – \u00a0found in kidneys and ovaries, secretion and absorption<\/p>\n

3. Stratified Squamous<\/strong> – found lining body cavities like the mouth and vagina and the outer layer of skin; protection<\/p>\n

4. Simple Columnar<\/strong> – \u00a0found in the digestive tract; absorbs nutrients and often contains goblet cells and microvilli<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0Stratified\u00a0Cuboidal<\/strong> – found in mammary glands and salivary glands, functions in secretion<\/p>\n

6. \u00a0Stratified Columnar – rare, found in the conjunctiva of the eye<\/p>\n

7. In addition to these basic shapes, epithelial cells can also be pseudostratified, where there is a single layer of cells, but the position of the nuclei gives it the appearance of having multiple layers. \u00a0 These cells are often found in the respiratory tract and can also contain cilia that help move mucus.<\/p>\n
